What You Need To Know About R22 and Freon

We still get a lot of questions about R22 and Freon. People often ask us, what’s the deal with Freon being so expensive lately? What’s going on?

R22 is Out

To make a long story short, the R22 Freon that we’ve used for decades is going away! Actually, it can no longer be manufactured or imported in the US, by law as of January 1, 2020. So, the R22 that is out there in the market is all that’s left! What that means is that it’s very expensive!

Do You Still Have an R22 System

Probably 40% of the houses we go to still have R22 systems, and it’s just going to get harder and harder to find the Freon for these.

What We Use Instead

What can we use instead? There is another refrigerant called 410A that has been around in the industry for about the last 12 years. This is becoming the most prevalent kind of refrigerant now because R22 is simply not going to be available.

What to do if You Still Have an R22 System

If you do have an R22 system it is probably getting up there in age. At this point, if you have a big leak or another major problem with your R22 system, we will just recommend replacing the whole system.
