New Government Mandate on Refrigerant (FREON)

This message is for people with HVAC systems that are 18, 19, or 20 years and older. There are a lot of you, we know. We work on older systems like this every day.

But now is a good time to think about getting rid of that old system, and getting something new.

When This Starts

Starting January 1, 2025 AC systems will use a new refrigerant. The industry is expecting to face a 10-15% price hike with these new systems. This is a big increase, because these new systems and the new refrigerant are expensive.

Price Increases

In the last 4 years, we have already seen a 35%-40% price increase, and this new increase will be on top of that. Covid made the raw materials more expensive. Then we had several new government mandates that have come out for furnaces, and now this new refrigerant.

Why Refrigerant Is Expensive

Why is this new refrigerant so expensive? It’s flammable. Because of the risk that the refrigerant could be ignited, these new systems will include sensors that sniff for leaks.

We will have to address these leaks right away. The days of charging up your system with a couple of pounds to extend their life and get them through the summer will be over. Now, if the sensor detects a leak it will turn the system off and turn on the blower to dilute any refrigerant in the air.

All these price increases we’ve had over the past few years are because of the amount of new research and development, and the new equipment needed for these systems. The industry started passing on these price increases 10 years ago, but with the new systems with the flammable refrigerant and sensor technology—prices will only go up from here.

Should You Replace Your System?

I just had this conversation with one of our customers. She has two 20-year-old systems, and one of them is just no good anymore. She asked me about replacing both systems at the same time, and I told her it was a good idea.

If you have an AC system that’s 20 years old, or it’s on the old refrigerant, or you’ve had a lot of problems with it, this is a good time to think about doing something about it before the big changes come.

Your Next Step

We will never charge you anything to come out, look at your system, and give you an estimate. There is nothing wrong with getting the information. We don’t want you to be stuck with a sudden huge bill for replacing your AC system that you weren’t expecting.
