Should I Cover My AC Unit This Fall?

Even though it’s not cold yet, Fall is coming! With Fall comes leaves, acorns, and pine needles all over your yard and all over your outdoor air conditioner units.

The other day, a customer asked me about covering his units for the fall and winter to keep the leaves and pine needles out of it. That sounds like a good idea. But we do not recommend you do this.

The Costly Reason You Shouldn’t

A few years ago we had a customer cover their unit for the winter. We ended up having a warmer than average Christmas Day, and he had a bunch of people over for the holiday. Forgetting that he had covered his unit, he turned on the air conditioner—and ruined his compressor!

When it’s chilly out and you’re not using your air conditioner, it may not do any damage. But when we cover things up it can be a catastrophic situation.
