The Navy
I got out of the Navy in May of 1973 and then went to trade school for a couple of months. But having been a Navy electrician, I knew more than the people who were teaching me! I even ended up teaching one of the classes.
Advice From My Mentor
My mentor said to me, “Why don’t you go into business for yourself?â€
I thought he was crazy because what did I know about business? What did I know about air conditioning? What did I know about anything? I had a lot of self-doubt about my ability to run a business.
He pointed out that I have the ability to talk to people. Plus, I’m from around here. I grew up here. Those two things are valuable in running a local business: I know the people, and I can talk to the people.
So I thought okay, I’ve been fired. It’s not the worst situation in the world, and I’ll make the best of it!
How It Started
And so I started the business! At the time, Plano was just beginning to grow and expand exponentially. I figured it was a good time to start a business, and I’d try it for a couple of years, and see what happened.
How It’s Going
And here we are, some 40+ years later! It turned out that getting fired was the best thing that ever happened to me.
