Let’s talk about the heat exchanger in your furnace. Once your heat exchanger gets to be about 20 years old it’s likely to have developed rust. And once you’ve got rust, you’ll end up with cracks and holes in the exchanger.
Your System’s Equipment
Furnaces are pretty basic pieces of equipment. There’s not a lot that can go wrong with them. If it weren’t for the heat exchangers rusting out, they would last much longer than 20 years.
What Happens to Old Exchangers
Cracks and holes in your heat exchanger allow combustion gasses to flow into your home instead of getting used by the furnace. This includes carbon monoxide, which is deadly. Once your heat exchanger gets to be about 20 years old, we check it very carefully. We look it over carefully, and we test for carbon monoxide. We want to make sure that an old heat exchanger doesn’t leave you in a dangerous and potentially deadly situation.
