Prepping Your System For Summer

What time of year is it? You guessed it, it’s tune-up season!

We are hitting a lot of tune-ups every day, and we are hitting them hard.

Filter

We always check the filter first. Your filter should be clean, and free of any dust. If it’s dirty, we’ll replace it. That will keep air flowing through your system, and make it work more efficiently.

Temperature Split

Then we check the temperature split across the evaporator. We check the temperature in the return plenum, and again in the supply plenum. Finally, we check the temperature of the air coming out of the ducts. We want to see a 20° difference between the air coming out of the supply plenum and the air going into the return plenum.

Float Switch

Another very important thing we check for on our spring tune-ups is whether or not you have a float switch safety device.

Drain Pan

If your drain pan fills up with water, a float switch will cut the unit off so that you don’t end up with any flood damage. This one switch can potentially save you thousands of dollars and months of reconstruction!

Outdoor Unit

After we finish in the attic, we head outside to check your outside unit. This is the main part of your air conditioner.

Electrical Components

We check all the electrical components, including the capacitor. We check the contactor to make sure it’s still working, not chattering too much, and has no obvious signs of damage.

Clean Coils

Finally, we check the coil. We clean the coil every spring to make sure there are no leaves or dirt lurking inside the fins. Dirt and leaves will restrict the air flow in your unit, making your system less efficient.

Your Next Step

These tune-ups can catch little problems before they turn into big problems, and can help keep your system running through our brutal Texas summers.

If you haven’t had your spring tune-up yet, give us a call before it’s too hot!
