4 Inch Filter vs 1 Inch Filter

How often do you change your air conditioner filter?

Danger of Not Changing Them

We recently serviced an air conditioner that hadn’t had a filter change in over a year. Eventually, it became so clogged that no air could flow through the filter, and it froze their system. It was so frozen that it took hours to thaw!

How often you should change your filter depends on what size your system uses. We usually see four-inch or one-inch filters. Two-inch filters also exist, but they’re not common.

4 Inch Filter

A four-inch filter has larger pleats, which let air pass through easily. These filters are not only less restrictive for your system, but they last a lot longer. You can change these every six months, and your system will be fine.

1 Inch Filter

A one-inch filter should be changed every month. These filters are thinner, and their pleats are much smaller. Some filter manufacturers say that these can last three months, but we strongly recommend that you change them every month.

Your Next Step

However long it’s been since you last changed your filter, think about changing it now!

The summer heat is coming, and you want your system to be in the best possible shape when it gets here. Your air conditioning system will need all the help it can get to handle the Texas summer!
