Zoned HVAC Systems

One trend in houses nowadays is zoned heating and AC systems. This means the house has one system for the whole house, but it may have two or even three thermostats.

How does that work? What does that do?

All of the thermostats communicate to a Zone Control Board. This board decides when to turn the equipment on and when to open and close a set of motorized dampers.

Upstairs Vs. Downstairs

For example, let’s say we have a system with two zones, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. And let’s say that the upstairs wants cooling, but the downstairs does not at this moment. The upstairs thermostat will tell the control board to cool. When the control board turns the AC on it will also close the downstairs damper. All the cool air goes upstairs, where it’s wanted.

AC in the Garages? Yep!

We recently installed a system for a customer who wanted air in his garage for his pool table. We added a zone to his system just for his garage. When he wants cool air in the garage, the damper closes for the rest of the house. Then when he wants air for the rest of the house, the damper for the garage closes.

This way he doesn’t have to cool his garage all the time, just when he wants it!
