Flue Pipe Safety Tips

Here’s a safety item that most people don’t think about: the flue pipe.

If you have a gas furnace, it’s important for your flue pipe to be in good shape. Back in the spring we had a lot of storms, and many of you got your roofs replaced. You’d be surprised how often we go into attics and find that when the roof was replaced, the flue pipe was knocked out of alignment.

Your flue pipe goes from your furnace up through the roof. It comes in segments, but these segments should all fit together in your attic. The trouble is that the segments come apart easily when accidentally knocked by someone … like a roofer.

When your flue pipe’s segments are knocked apart, all the combustion gas from your furnace goes into your attic instead of out through the roof. This is a big concern, especially during a big cold snap when your furnace runs all day. That happens in Texas at least once a year, right? You do not want all that combustion gas to build up in your attic.

If you haven’t checked or if you haven’t had us out to check your HVAC system yet this year, give us a call. When we do a service call we always check to make sure your flue pipe is together and runs all the way through the roof. You can even do this yourself! Go take a peek into your attic and make sure the pipe doesn’t have any gaps. Do this especially if you got a new roof in the spring or summer.

We want you to stay warm, and stay safe!
